YM Quotes:

Youth ministry is always a challenge. Youth ministry is consistently changing. Youth ministry is regularly surprising. Youth ministry is fresh all the time. (Mark Oestreicher)

Although students need guidance from good leaders, we often take on too much of the responsibility for their knowledge about God. We want them to blindly adopt our opinions rather than work out their own understanding. Instead we must help young people learn how to think for themselves with God’s perspective as their foundation and the Word of God as their rule. (Sean Dunn)

Wearing the Logo? (sport-related talk)

Almost every organisation has some kind of logo - buisnesses and companies, universities, social groups, sporting clubs and teams.

A teams logo .....
  • will be on everything it uses to promote the team - shirts, scarves, hats, etc. Any kind of object to promote the club or team will carry the team logo
  • Will always be the same - the uniforms may change in Colour/pattern/design, and the players may be change, but the logo is will remain the same

There is great pride when wearing certain logos.
Who would I be representing if I wore this logo? (Have a visual example)
                        eg        3 lions - England
                                   Silver fern - New Zealand
                                   Springbok – South Africa
In the competitive sense, whenever we pull on the shirt and wear on our chest the logo, we’re playing for pride in what we represent, whether it our country, our province or our school.

Whenever someone sees us wearing a logo, they automatically assume that we are in some way associated with that club - either as a player, as a worker, or a fan. You fly your colours, showing who you identify with when you wear a logo.

As a Christian, what logo have I been marked with?

The Bible says that when we become Christians, God puts a seal on our lives - a seal of ownership, a seal that says, ‘You’re mine’. God does that by placing a part of Him inside us - the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a person and has His own personality. Therefore, because we are made up of spirit too, we can know Him and have a friendship with Him. The mark that God places upon us is actually a part of Himself. This mark, the Holy Spirit cannot be seen with our eyes but should be visible in us through the way in which we live our lives. How? The Bible says in Galatians 5:22, “… the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. “

If a person begins to see these qualities slowly start to change in his life, he or she can know for sure that God has marked him out and is working in his life.
  • Where once he hated and was critical, that person may become more loving and gracious
  • Where once this person was always grumbling, now he or she has real joy
  • Where once this person always worried, now he or she trusts God to help him in every situation
  • Where once this person wanted his way immediately, he is willing to show more patience.

Just as an apple tree bears apples, so a person who is marked by the holy spirit will grow the qualities just
mentioned, the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Just as when one wears a baseball cap with the Liverpool logo on it, we all assume that person is a Liverpool fan, so too we can trust that as we seek Him as Christians, God will grow these qualities of love, joy, and peace in us.   When you plant an apple seed into the ground, its purpose is to grow up into a tree and bear apples. When God places a part of Himself into our lives, His purpose is to help us grow and take on more and more the nature of Jesus.

Wearing the Mark
Wearing a logo has a dual purpose -

1. Identification..... identity
    Identifying yourself with something is a choice.
    Identifying yourself with something displays some kind of loyalty, commitment, devotion, association
    I identify with what I most like.

As a Christian, God marks my life – identifies me as part of His team, a child of his family.
It is important for all of us to have a sense of belonging to something, a club, school, or gang, because this helps us to identify with what’s important to us.

God wants to do that for us.

2. Ownership/Sponsorship
- Most people wear a logo out of some kind of devotion or commitment
- Sports people/teams – sponsors pay lots of money for their logo to be worn. This helps to pay  the players’
wages and training and traveling expenses.

God is on our side.
Just like any sportsperson want to be the best they can be, in life, God wants us to be the best we can be …… to be winners ……. And He will back us!

He is always there at our side…..
      Whispering encouragement
Providing for our needs (share a miracle story)

Wearing the LOGO is important for identity and belonging. God wants us to identify ourselves with Him and belong to Him.
