YM Quotes:

Youth ministry is always a challenge. Youth ministry is consistently changing. Youth ministry is regularly surprising. Youth ministry is fresh all the time. (Mark Oestreicher)

Although students need guidance from good leaders, we often take on too much of the responsibility for their knowledge about God. We want them to blindly adopt our opinions rather than work out their own understanding. Instead we must help young people learn how to think for themselves with God’s perspective as their foundation and the Word of God as their rule. (Sean Dunn)

YOU matter to God! (mime, skit)

Characters:
Person 1 (P1), Person 2 (P2), Stupid (S), Ugly (U), Worthless (W), Narrator (N)

Setting:
Mime. Only the Narrator speaks (he can be off stage if possible, but needs to be able to see the drama, in order to know when to talk). Stupid (S), Ugly (U), Worthless (W) should wear all black with mime faces. Plain face is also acceptable. Person 1 (P1) and Person 2 (P2) can wear plain street clothes.

Motions:
Stupid – tipping with your point finger to your head
Ugly – Going with one hand over your face, then making an ugly grimace
Worthless – pretend spitting on the ground and stepping on it
You matter to God – point to the other person, hug yourself and then point upwards

S, U and W are on stage, in neutral position, with heads down. They stand in a row fcing the audience.
P1 enters, walking happily.

N:         ONE DAY; A PERSON WAS WALKING ALONG LIFE’S ROAD.

P1 keeps walking until he reaches S. Once P1 is in front of S, S pushes P1 and motions, as N says:

N:         YOU’RE STUPID!

P1 motions, questioningly, I’m stupid? S repeats the motions to P1. P1 repeats it to himself a couple of times. P1 shrugs and keeps walking, this time a little less happy. (S goes back to original position as P1 starts walking on.)

Once P1 is in front of U, U pushes P1 and motions, as N says:

N:         YOU’RE UGLY!

P1 motions, questioningly, I’m ugly? U repeats the motions to P1. P1 repeats it to himself a couple of times. P1 shrugs and keeps walking, this time sad, with shoulders sagging. (U returns to original position as P1 starts walking on.)

Once P1 is in front of W, W pushes P1 and motions, as N says:

N:         YOU’RE WORTHLESS!

P1 motions, questioningly, I’m worthless? W repeats the motions to P1. P1 repeats it to himself, W continues. P1 moves slowly to center of stage. As P1 moves, S and U join in with W pushing P1 and making their respective motions. After a few seconds of being pushed by all three, P1 gives up and falls to the ground. When P1 falls, S, U and W silently applaud, cheer and then move back to their original positions.

P2 enters stage, carrying a Bible, looking very happy.

N:         ONE DAY, ANOTHER PERSON WAS WALKING ALONG LIFE’S ROAD.

P2 keeps walking. He spots P1 crying on the floor and goes over to him. He taps him on the shoulder and P1 slowly stands up wiping tears away from his eyes. P2 motions, as if to sak, What’s wrong?
P1 points to S and motions, I’m stupid. P1 points to U and motions, I’m ugly. P1 points to W and motions, I’m worthless.
P2 shakes his head and opens his Bible. He shows P1 a verse and then motions, as N says:

N:         YOU MATTER TO GOD!

P1 repeats, questioningly, I matter to God? P2 motions again, You matter to God! P1 repeats a couple of times, each time growing more and more excited. Finally he looks again at P2 and motions I matter to God, more definite this time. P1 and P2 celebrate and start walking together down “life’s road”, arm in arm.

Once P1 and P2 are in front of S, S pushes P1 again and motions, You’re stupid! P1 motions, I’m stupid? As if he is asking P2 this time. P2 steps up, shakes his head, opens his Bible and shows S a verse. S looks stunned, sways and then falls face down on the ground. P1 and P2 look very pleased, go arm in arm again and together, they step over S’s body.

Once P1 and P2 are in front of U, U pushes P1 again and motions, You’re ugly! P1 starts to motions, I’m ugly? But before he can finish the motion, P2 steps up, opens his Bible and shows U a verse. U has the same reaction as S. P1 and P2 do the same thing as they did with S.

Once P1 and P2 are in front of W, W pushes P1 again and motions, You’re worthless! P1 shakes his head and lightly pushes P2 up with his Bible to W. P1 looks quite satisfied, as P2 shows W the verse. W has the same reaction as the other two, only more violent. P1 and P2 do the same thing as they did with the other two.

Just before exiting the stage, P1 gets an idea. P1 takes P2’s Bible and goes back to W and taps him on the shoulder. W stands up. P1 opens the Bible, shows him a verse and motions, as N says:

N:         YOU MATTER TO GOD!

W repeats, questioningly, I matter to God? P1 motions again, You matter to God! W repeats a couple of times, each time more and more excited. Finally he looks again at W and motions I matter to God, more definite this time. W and P1 celebrate and all three of them exit stage, walking arm in arm.

EXPLANATION:
The World tells us all the time that we are stupid, ugly and worthless, so that eventually we believe it ourselves and loose hope. God has a different picture of us, in his eyes we are beautiful and he loves us. We mean so much to him that he gave his son’s live for us.
