YM Quotes:

Youth ministry is always a challenge. Youth ministry is consistently changing. Youth ministry is regularly surprising. Youth ministry is fresh all the time. (Mark Oestreicher)

Although students need guidance from good leaders, we often take on too much of the responsibility for their knowledge about God. We want them to blindly adopt our opinions rather than work out their own understanding. Instead we must help young people learn how to think for themselves with God’s perspective as their foundation and the Word of God as their rule. (Sean Dunn)

Story 2: The outcome is not up to you...

What do I mean by that? Let me try to explain it with an experience I made:

In my early twenties I was a volunteer youth leader of a local church in Austria. We had about 8-12 regulars on a Saturday evening. It was working well and we had often a good time, but I felt that I needed to deepen the relationships with the young guys more so that they might grow in their love for God.
Eventually, there were three guys in the group with which I developed good friendships with. I tried to have "a kind of" mentor-ship relationship with them (you know guiding them, helping them to make important decisions in life and their walk with God).
So, I tried to meet with them occasionally (it's not that easy with a full-time job and a family), shared with them my thoughts and challenged them often to reflect Christ in their daily lives.
In the beginning everything seemed to work well with all three of them, but after some month I experienced three different ways of change in their lives:

- The one guy stopped coming, was not interested in God or Christianity at all anymore.

- The second guy was uncertain for a long time, he would still show up sometimes (kinda lukewarm).

- The third guy got really exited about Christ, got involved in youth leadership and is now teaching/ leading others.

The point I am trying to make here is:
* The youth workers responsibility is to let young people know about God & Jesus.
* God knows every person, he knows how they will respond to Him.
* I don't need to feel like I failed, if someone turns away.
* I just need to give my best, not more but also not less.
